Terry S. Ruhl, MD
BiographyDr. Ruhl was born in East Aurora, New York, about 20 miles from Buffalo. He was born into a family of teachers. His dad was a high school math teacher and his mom taught for awhile in one of the last one room school houses in Western New York. At East Aurora high school he competed in high school volleyball, making Western New York second team All Star as a setter. He also sang in musicals, having lead roles in Hello Dolly and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He graduated valedictorian. Terry then moved to Houghton College where he majored in Chemistry, with minors in math and biology. He continued to sing in the College Choir and lead a small touring vocal group called "Malachi". His sports career having peaked in High School, he played on the intramural soccer team "AG" (standing for Accumulated Garbage). During sophomore year, while staring at a bench full of glassware, Terry decided there must be more to life than test tubes. After a two week practicum living with a family physician, he decided medicine was for him. He graduated Summa Cum Laude. During the summer he got married to Lori, learned to play guitar, worked on an assembly line and lived in three places. Medical School at SUNY Buffalo was a relief. He kept up his musical skills singing with the a capella group the "Dermatones" and at church. He survived medical school with sanity, marriage, idealism and dedication to Family Medicine intact. In 1988 with a very pregnant wife, Dr. Ruhl beat a track to Midland, Michigan where Stephen (b 8/89) was one of his first visible impacts on the community. At the hospital with many names (Midland Hospital, Midland Hospital Center, MidMichigan Regional Medical Center, MidMichigan Medical Center - Midland) he trained under the likes of Dr. Robert Lachance, Dr. John Pfenninger and Dr. William Dery. He further developed his love of delivering babies, procedures and thinking through why we do things. Upon graduation, Dr. Ruhl accepted an invitation to join the faculty of Midland Family Practice Residency program as Associate Director. He had a very active clinical practice, especially in obstetrics and pediatrics, while pioneering the curriculum in research. He talked the faculty into a two day retreat at a Ropes Course where the program director almost strangled himself on the crossing wires. Surprisingly, he still had a job and taught for eight years. In 1999, a strong urge to move closer to home prompted the Ruhl family, now five with the addition of Rebekah Joy (b 4/91) and Joanna Grace (b 5/95) to move to Altoona, Pennsylvania, to join the faculty of Altoona Family Physicians. Terry is active in his church and is interested in other cultures, having traveled in Africa and Asia. Family time is important.
