SUMMER PRECEPTORSHIP PROGRAM

            The Altoona Hospital is a 353-bed community hospital located in Central Pennsylvania.  The facility serves as a community hospital for Altoona and Blair County and as a referral center and trauma center for much of the surrounding area.  The hospital is equipped with the latest technology and the Medical Staff includes a broad range of specialists and subspecialists in addition to a strong core of primary care physicians.  The hospital sponsors a Family Practice Residency, Altoona Family Physicians. 
    The Altoona Hospital has been an active participant in the Western Pennsylvania Health Preceptorship Program as well as sponsoring its own summer preceptorship for medical students who have completed one year of medical school. Students participate in a variety of activities during their six-week program.  All students spend one week in the office of Altoona Family Physicians as well as one week working with the residents on the inpatient Family Medicine Service.  The student may then select from a variety of one-week blocks including Medical and Surgical Rotations, Ambulatory Care, Trauma, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Physical Medicine, Orthopedics, Laboratory, etc.  Time may also be spent in the offices of a variety of primary care physicians in both urban and rural settings.
       Altoona is a small city of 56,000 people located in the mountains of Central Pennsylvania.  It is about two hours from Pittsburgh and one hour from State College (home of Penn State).  There are many cultural and social activities in both Altoona and State College during the summer months as well as a wide variety of outdoor activities. 
    A stipend is provided which currently is $2000 for six weeks. 

    Unfortunately we are unable to provide housing and since some of the physicians' offices where students will be observing are not located within walking distance of the hospital, it is necessary that the students have a car to provide their own transportation.   The preceptorship for 2013 will run from June 10-July 18. Application deadline April 12.
