Rocking Chair Project - Altoona site

AFP was selected to pilot a new AAFP Foundation project to support family/baby bonding.  Second year residents present a rocking chair to one of the patients they deliver.  At AFP we have decided to add some age appropriate books.  This project (and some pictures of us) can be seen at the national site at www.rockingchairproject.org.

Sandy Panther from the AAFP Foundation was on hand for the Rocking Chair Project Kick Off.

The first rocking chair family!

The Rocking Chair Project was conceived by Trish and Mike Magee, MD.  The Magee's have spent the last thirteen years promoting the message that all children can be "school ready" no matter what their family economic status through comprehensive government policies and non-profit service program.

Most recently Trish Magee, as Executive Director of Reach Out and Read (ROR) of Greater New York has worked to narrow the literacy gap by promoting ROR's early literacy intervention programs for economically disadvantaged children 6 months to 5 years.  The Rocking Chair Project builds upon the Magee's desire and passion to conduct a community outreach program in which new mothers would be given a rocking chair to help them nurture themselves and their babies during the crucial early months.

The initial phase of the project is the pilot phase in which second year residents at four family medicine residency programs will participate.  We have been chosen to participate.
