Community Oriented Family Medicine IIGoal:
The goal of the Outpatient Family Medicine rotation series is to give
every resident the knowledge, skills and attitudes to provide a lifetime of
comprehensive, cost-effective, and caring service to families in the outpatient
setting. Outpatient Family Medicine IIThis is a one-month rotation during the second half of the second year, coordinated by Dr. Sweeney. Objectives: By the end of Outpatient Family Medicine II, the resident will:
1.
Apply outpatient skills in a rural setting.
Instructional technique: The
resident will spend one day a week at Williamsburg. 2.
Become proficient in the management of routine gynecological care and
procedures. Demonstrate compassion
and integrity toward underserved populations. (Knowledge,
Skills, Attitudes; Patient care, Medical knowledge, Professionalism) Instructional technique: a. Care for Women's Health and Wellness patients on Fridays. b. View CD-ROMs and videos. c.
Perform GYN procedures on Monday afternoon. 3.
Counsel and educate their patients and families effectively using
multiple modalities. (Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes;
Patient care, Medical knowledge, Professionalism) Instructional technique: a. Patient education scavenger hunt. b.
Patient education chart audit. 4.
Organize and conduct an efficient outpatient visit, creating and
sustaining a therapeutic and ethically sound relationship with patients.

attitudes; Interpersonal and Communication Skills) Instructional methods. a) Discussion of videotaped interactions with the Behavioral Scientist. b)
AFP office hours three half
days a week. 5.
Accurately and completely evaluate patients by phone, discerning those
who need to be seen that day and giving accurate advice to those who do not need
to be seen. (Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes; Patient
care, Medical knowledge, Professionalism) a) Monday from 8:00 am to 9:00 will answer and document calls from patients wishing to be seen. The rest of the morning will see sick call. b)
Triage resources/books to AFP library. 6. Understand the workings of a family practice office. (Knowledge,
Attitudes; Systems-based practice) a)
Spend 1/2 day (total) rotating with front office staff.
Will perform filing, computer entry, answering the phone, scheduling and
making referrals. 7.
Code and bill outpatient family medicine family medicine visits,
procedures and tests accurately and efficiently. (Skills;
Systems-based practice) Instructional technique: a)
Readings, discussions and chart audits. 8.
Formulate a personal practice search plan. (Knowledge,
Attitudes; Systems-based practice) a)
Fill out practice plan form - assessment of preferences and priorities.
Discuss with Dr. Beckstead or advisor. 9. Analyze practice experience and perform practice-based improvement activities using a systematic methodology. (Knowledge,
Skills, Attitudes; Practice-based Learning and Improvement) a) Select an opportunity for improvement at AFP. Using a CPI process, analyze the problem, assemble a team, plan and institute a solution. Complete by OFM III. Jim Roebuck to be a resource. Go to Outpatient Family Medicine III
