Megan I. Maurer, DO Class of 2010 Hi there! My name is Megan Inskip Maurer. I am an adopted, only child from Fairfield, Pennsylvania, which is a few miles southwest of Gettysburg. My Mom and Dad are both retired educators and I am the first in my family to go into medicine. I graduated from Fairfield Area High School in 1998, where I was active in all things musical (concert band, jazz band, marching band, concert choir, show choir and musical theater). After high school I attended Penn State University main campus, where I learned to love football and Peachy Paterno ice cream. After switching majors multiple times, I settled on a degree in psychology with a neuroscience minor. I was planning on getting my Ph.D. in psychophysiology, but after interning for a summer at the National Institute of Health I discovered that I didn’t enjoy sitting in an office reading all day as much as I thought I would. The highlight of my time there was interacting with elderly people from the Baltimore area, who were subjects in our research project. This is when I realized that medicine was a better choice for me. While at Penn State, I was also manager of the marketing department of the student newspaper, The Daily Collegian, and was a member of the University Choir. I became president of the choir my “super senior” year. (Like a good Penn Stater, I was on the five-year plan!) In 2000 I went on a trip to Eastern Europe with the University Choir and met my husband. He was also a member of the choir, but because it was such a large group, we had never met. We discovered that we had common interests (Monty Python, in particular) and common geography. Dirk is from Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, just 20 minutes from Fairfield. In 2003, Dirk and I graduated from Penn State and got married. We then moved to New Jersey, where I attended the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine (way too long a name, I know). I had an interest in family practice from the beginning of medical school that was unwavering, except for a few silly months when I thought I might want to do psychiatry! I was initially attracted to AFP because of the location. After 4 years of living in New Jersey (the most densely populated state in the country), I realized that Pennsylvania is where I belonged. I was excited about AFP’s proximity to family and, of course, Penn State football! After doing an elective rotation with AFP I found I loved the people involved with the program. I graduated from medical school in May of 2007 and moved to Altoona. I am thrilled to be out of New Jersey and back into a rural area! My interests in medicine include endocrinology and palliative care. My interests outside of medicine include reading, spending time with my two mini dachshunds, and ballroom dancing with my husband, which I would love to pursue competitively. (In case you’re wondering, rumba and cha cha are my favorites!)
