Mark Kropinak, DO Rotating Intern My name is Mark Kropinak. I grew up in Deer Park, Long Island with my sister, two brothers, Mom, and Dad. I obtained a bachelor of business administration degree from Hofstra University in Long Island and, upon graduating, worked in the creative department of an advertising agency. Although I enjoyed some aspects of my job, I soon realized that the business world was not for me. I became interested in medicine while searching for treatment of injuries I sustained in my late teens and early twenties. Since the extent of my undergraduate science background was astronomy and geology, I began taking science classes at night, feeling I would enjoy a career in the health field. In order to gain some clinical experience, I joined the volunteer ambulance department in my town. To obtain my EMT certification, I spent several hours in the emergency department of a local hospital. After a short time I found that I really enjoyed it and realized that practicing medicine was what I wanted to do. I attended the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. The personal benefits I experienced through osteopathic manipulation inspired me to become a D.O. I was initially drawn to Altoona because of the program’s dual osteopathic and allopathic accreditation. However, I chose to come here to be part of a close-knit, supportive team where I could receive personalized training and exposure to a broad patient base. Ironically, I recently realized that the small town of Clymer, PA where my father grew up and which I visited several times as a child, is only a few miles from Altoona. So as it turns out, I will have family close by. Interests in medicine: ophthalmology, emergency medicine, rehabilitation, sports medicine Interests outside of medicine: cycling, skiing Mark finished his rotating internship 6/07 to pursue a residency in ophthalmology.
