Gurmeet Kalra, MD Class of 2010
Hi, I am Gurmeet Kalra.I grew up in a small town called Moughalsarai in the
eastern part of India, named because it was thought to be a home for the
Moughals when they invaded India in the 18th Century. Life's journey took me
to many places in India, then finally to US from Bayarea, CA to Altoona, PA
, where I embark on a journey that I had dreamed of years ago. I think I was
4 years old when I first answered 'Doctor' to the
question that every child gets asked, what I wanted to be when I grew
up. Needless to say that answer never changed , although I did get
sidetracked for a couple of years in between.
I did my Masters in Perfusion Technology from Boston (Brigham & Women's
Hospital), then worked as a Clinical Perfusionist in CA for 5 years prior to
getting back into medicine. I enjoyed every moment of it, but there was
always something missing...... the contact with patients, their families,
the satisfaction that one gets from making a difference in the life of a
child, the joy of bringing a child into this world, all the reasons why I
chose Family Medicine.
Why Altoona?? when I interviewed here, I really liked the place, the
people, the attendings, the staff at the office are all so friendly,
& approachable. The fact that we are the only
residency program here gives us a great opportunity to do & see a lot of
patients & variety of diseases. This is a great
area for exploring nature, I like to trek, go
hiking , & do white water rafting, so I hope to explore the countryside here
and take full advantage of what Altoona has to offer.
Overall, I am looking forward to my stay here in Altoona for the
coming 3 years.
