STFM Group on Patient Education
January/February 2002

 Goals for the working group

"What would you like to see the Group on Patient Education do in the next 2 years?"

Generate excitement and be visible at the Spring STFM meeting.

Since I have not been to meetings recently it would be helpful to know what activities have been accomplished and or ideas brought forth at previous meetings( Is there a summary available?)  I wasn't sure if minutes were ever sent out.  I remember getting minutes several years ago. It might be helpful for there to be some type of 1 page summary for new members joining.

There was talk a couple of years ago about revising the Pt Ed curriculum that I co-authored that was published by STFM in 1981. I started to organize that then dropped the ball. I would be interested in reviving that idea and will have some time in the 2002-2003 year during my sabbatical 4 months to work on that. Any possibility that STFM or others would have an interest in publishing that? (DM)

Help facilitate development of computer based patient ed systems within residencies so they may be studied.

I have not been a member of the STFM Patient Ed. group in the past so I am not aware of what has or has not been done. I have been very active with the Patient Education Conference.  Has there been meetings or focus groups that members of STFM have provided any direction of things/topics that they would like to see the group work on?

I would like to see us begin to actively collaborate with other advocacy groups and perhaps even bring them into the conference as presenters (somewhat in the vein of The Family in Family Medicine Conference enlarging its tent, though not to that extent).  Names escape me at the moment, but there is a lot of work going on in other major organizations such as CHES related, perhaps minority affairs, gov health initiatives for specific populations, whatever the group is for medication compliance/adherence, etc.  Don't mean to be purposely vague, this is just quickly off the cuff

Unsure.

Best e-mail site for patient ed.

To continue efforts at strengthening the concept of pt ed in residency programs, with so many changes administratively and the push to include more in the curriculum pt ed falls to the wayside.

Focus on residency programs and help them revive their patient ed. curricula

Sponsor a pre-conference workshop on new computer and internet developments for patient education.

We could at least get the newsletter and list serve re-started. In addition, maybe we could lend ourselves to revision of STFM  materials? For example, our Nutrition Group helped revise the Core Curriculum Guidelines on nutrition, then took on the task of reviewing and revising the "Redbook" (curriculum in nutrition). Or maybe this has already been done with the patient ed stuff. I am really uninformed about the patient ed stuff!!

Apply for grants to fund electronic medical records with anticipatory guidance and prevention prompts, perhaps using a PDA, easy to use and affordable to teaching programs!

Re-look at the curricula for patient education - revisit and revise for residents and students.  I still use many aspects of the original curriculum, have added new things and I'm sure others have lots to share. Would love to get new ideas.  I still find patient ed to be a "hard sell" to students who think they know it all and don't need training in patient ed.

When I was involved with this committee in the past, I was looking for assistance in developing a curriculum for residents.  I also think patient education material develop and selection would be useful.

Work on the PE Conference consumes a lot of time, perhaps this should be main focus.

I think we should plan to be more active. This entails a lot of ongoing activities outside of the meetings during the Patient Ed conference. There must be some sort of list-serve. We may also benefit from having some regional coordination. Also,  how about the joint project(s) we talked about a while back. Of course, I sympathize with the former Chairs of the group, it seems everyone is just so busy.

Have more of a presence at STFM?  not sure....

"I have set aside a part of my residency's web site for use of the Group on Patient Education.  You can view it at www.altoonafp.org/patiented.htm.  It is currently empty, waiting to be filled.  How could we use this web site that would be useful to you, your patients, your teaching duties or this group?"

Not sure as of yet.

Not sure-need to think about it.

I need to think about this one

Perhaps these already exist and I just need to get myself clued in.

INFO on Patient ED Conf?

We'll see...  solicit links or sites that others have found useful and "neutral."

I'll give this some thought; no immediate applications come to mind other than a list of any web resources that members suggest and you want to create links to

Have a home page with categorical links to aspects of patient education which when clicked could offer a chat room (Q & A), patient ed tools, resources.

Perhaps resources could be posted based on topic (include a brief summary of pros and cons by person who posted the resource).  Indicate which ones are appropriate for direct access by patients.

Save some space for innovative ideas; perhaps this could also serve as another clearinghouse for peer reviewed educational materials that offices could get free or for a nominal charge.

The website would be useful if we could get materials on how to teach the basics of patient education to residents and if we had a section where we could ask questions and share as well as getting updated information on meetings, etc. I am active in the Nutrition Group, and we have a newsletter and a list serve for email. I believe the Group on Patient Ed has had this in the past. It's helpful.

Develop on line guide for residencies in training residents in patient education with an emphasis toward accessing and evaluating patient ed materials available on the web.  Develop AAFP site where there are linkages to other patient education sites.

How about establishing a linkage with an Email communication device for family docs, eg MDhub.com

Use it as a resource for patient education materials/websites, etc by topic.  Listing for curricular ideas for residents, students, practicing Drs.

A sounding board for questions, challenges, etc.  The committee might also post announcements, minutes, etc,

What about putting information about teaching PE to med students and residents.  FAQs may be good.  Information about next meeting locations.

I can provide you Links to the patient education lectures and materials we use, that are already online at our website. (CZ)

Perhaps, members can list "best patient education materials(all types)" and how to locate them.  Also, indicate if materials are available in other languages and what their reading level is.

Other comments

Since I review materials for AAFP and AFP; would be happy to get suggestions from the Group regarding these resources. (RK)

I have some ideas, but unfortunately, limited time to devote right now. But, I would be willing and happy to help where I can.

REMOVE (Sorry, too many competing priorities)

I remain interested, but unfortunately with very limited time to help much, or even attend STFM. I'd like to still get the emails, and hope that someday I can become active again.

I can no longer get funding to attend the STFM meetings.  In addition, another faculty member has taken over the patient education responsibilities in my department.

My position at the University has changed and I am primarily involved with undergrad teaching. So I think that I will not continue with the group.  I'm sorry for my late response.

Money and time are barriers to participating in the Group.
