Fiona J. McLellan, MD

Clinical Faculty

"...balancing professional and personal interests in our lives results in  well-rounded compassionate family physicians.."

Biography

Dr. McLellan was born in Knaresborough in Yorkshire, in the north of England.  While attending elementary school she wanted to learn to play the viola and train to be a doctor.  At high school she played in the orchestra, played field hockey, and enjoyed playing euphonium in the high school band.  She became principal viola in the City of Leeds Youth Orchestra and also the Youth Opera Orchestra.

Fiona then attended medical school at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London where she continued to play in the orchestra both at the medical school and the University of London level.  She completed a Bachelor's degree in basic medical sciences with psychology and special interest in developmental psychology and graduated with honors.  During medical school she married Mark, a physics major at the time.  She was fortunate during medical school to have the opportunity to live and work in New Zealand taking an nine-week elective in emergency medicine and surgery. There she learned how valuable family practice physicians are in a small town community.  During one summer vacation she was also fortunate to have the opportunity to work in Vancouver, British Columbia, and tour the west coast of the United States.  She even managed to persuade her husband to apply for a Ph.D. program at her medical school so they could spend more time together during home rotations.

In 1995, Fiona finished medical school and started her internship in the London teaching hospitals rotating through acute adult medicine, geriatrics, orthopedic surgery, general and vascular surgery.  During that time her husband completed his Ph.D. and accepted a post-doctorate position at Penn State University.  In 1996, Fiona followed her husband to Pennsylvania.  She feels fortunate that she had the opportunity to learn a lot more about family medicine in the United States compared with general practice in the United Kingdom and soon realized in fact that this would be her chosen career path.  In 1997 Fiona started residency at Allegheny Family Physicians, now known as Altoona Family Physicians Residency Program.  During residency Fiona expanded her procedural skills and developed her curricular interests in pediatrics and performance related injuries.  She was thrilled to have the opportunity to work closely with medical students.  She appreciated the opportunity to learn more about osteopathic physicians and physician assistants, both of which were new concepts to Fiona.

Upon graduation from residency in 2000, Dr. McLellan accepted an invitation to join the faculty of the Altoona Family Physicians Residency Program as a Clinical Faculty.  She maintains her clinical practice at the Williamsburg Family Practice office where she continues to work closely with the PA students and the medical students. Fiona and Mark now have three children, Heather born 11/2000, Elizabeth born 5/2003, and Robert born 9/2006.  Mark is now an adjunct teaching faculty at the nearby Juniata College.  Fiona still finds time to play in the Nittany Valley Symphony, a semi-professional organization based in State College, Pennsylvania.
