Family Centered Maternity Care Conferences

A component of the OB and neonatal rotations is small group teaching times with AFP faculty members.  Teaching occurs from 8-9 on Wednesday mornings in the nursery.    Topics are requested by the residents in advance.

ALSO review

We will dust off the models and give you the opportunity to discuss and practice any of the ALSO skills.

Preparation required:  Study ALSO algorithms, drugs and skills and be ready for the first session of the month.

Neonatal resuscitation

Every person who attends deliveries must be proficient in neonatal resuscitation.  You will brush up your skills during this teaching session.  You will practice discuss and practice your resuscitation skills then demonstrate them by performing a standard Neonatal Resuscitation Program megacode.

Preparation required:   Study NRP algorithms, skills, drug doses and be prepared when Dr. Ruhl or McLellan is scheduled.

Monitor strip review

Put on your retrospectroscopes.  You will review interesting strips from the month.  Using the mnemonic DR C BRAVADO, you will completely describe the fetal monitor strip, provide an interpretation and dissect the management

Preparation required:  Select at least four strips to examine.  Have the strips and the chart available for the last session of the month.

Review of FP deliveries

Join the quality review committee.  You will  review the documentation of prenatal care, labor and delivery all the Family Practice patients delivered in the last month.  You will provide written feedback to the primary provider (and a copy for the OB notebook).

Preparation required:  Get the list of delivered patients from Kim and have their hospital charts pulled.

Newborn exam skills

Don’t forget the babies!  On months with a neonatal resident, the group will examine all available babies.  Each resident will demonstrate a complete newborn exam and be able to explain common abnormalities.  The team will examine any children in the nursery with abnormalities.

Mini-talks

Faculty (and possibly other attendings) will prepare 5-15 minute “mini-talks” on common obstetrical topics to be followed by discussion and questions.  Topics can be requested from the specific faculty member at least a week ahead of time.
