Application FAQ's

General questions
What are your deadlines?
While we will accept applications at any point before our match list is due, later applications present logistical problems.  We have very limited interview opportunities in January and February and prefer to schedule interviews before then.

I applied using ERAS.  Does that mean I am in the  NRMP match?
No.  ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) is a system to transmit your application and supporting documents to the residency programs of your choice.  NRMP (National Resident Matching Program) is a system to match you with a residency.  It takes a separate application in addition to the ERAS system.

MD FAQ
Why do you have so few positions open in the match?
AFP recruits both allopathic and osteopathic students for our residency program. The two matches occur at different times, with the DO match in February and the MD match in March.  Every year we assess our applicants and may decide to change the number taken in each match.

Does this affect my chances to match with your program?
If we decrease our spots in the NRMP match, it indicates that we have many outstanding DO applicants to our program.  While this does affect your chances, you should be reassured that, if you should match with us, you will be training with great residents.  This is a GOOD sign for our residency and your future education with us.  If you have ANY discomfort about this, call us at 814-889-2020.

DO FAQ
Should osteopathic students apply using ERAS?
While we will gladly accept DO applications using ERAS, we see no advantage for osteopathic students to use it (and some disadvantages).  Feel free to download our simple application from this site.  Also, remember that applying using ERAS does not mean you have to participate in the NRMP match.

You are listed in the Opportunities book as a rotating internship, but I want a three year family practice residency.  Please explain.

In 1991 when our internship was approved by the AOA, our curriculum fit better as a rotating internship than a family practice-directed track because of the order of our rotations.  The AOA and PCOM OPTI accredit our internship.  It is fully integrated into our family practice residency.  Our first year osteopathic interns/residents continue right on into the second and third years of their family practice residency.

IMG FAQ
Should I fax you my materials?
We are only accepting MD applications through the ERAS system.  Please do not fax us any materials unless we specifically request them.

I haven't heard about my application.  Should I call?
Please do not call to inquire into the status of your application.  Every application is reviewed.  Because of the large volume of applications we are unable to track individual applications.  If your application has been favorably reviewed, you will be invited for an interview, either by phone or in person.

I'm scheduled for a phone interview.  Help!  What can I expect?
Sometimes we ask for a preliminary phone interview before offering a formal interview.  If you are selected, one of our physician faculty will call you to chat about your interest in family medicine and your qualifications for our program.  They will also present a case where you will role play the physician.  You will be expected to interview the "patient", describe the exam you would do, order appropriate tests, make a diagnosis and describe appropriate treatment.  The case will not be tricky, so relax and do your best.
