Donald M. Beckstead, MD
Program Director

"If you do your best, that is the most that anyone can ask
of you!"

Biography
I was born
in Cleveland where I lived until 1969, at which time my family moved to
Maryland. There I went to Good Counsel High School where I graduated
valedictorian. I then attended college at Catholic University in Washington DC
while working full-time as a bowling alley mechanic and assistant trainer for
the Washington Bullets (now Wizards) basketball team. After graduating summa
cum laude from C.U., I entered medical school at the University of Maryland
where I graduated in 1984.
Recognizing the desirability of doing a family practice residency at an
unopposed program, I chose AFP and matched with the program in 1984. Upon
finishing residency in 1987, I remained as faculty and opened our rural
satellite office in Williamsburg, Pennsylvania, where I did primarily clinical
work and teaching for several years as faculty.
Eventually
I was given additional administrative duties and became the Associate Program
Director. On July 1, 2006 I was offered the opportunity to become Program
Director which I have happily accepted, as I feel I am able to facilitate
Altoona Family Physicians continuing as an excellent family medicine residency
program that prepares its graduates for all aspects of medical practice.
I recently
celebrated my 20th wedding anniversary with my beautiful wife,
Sharon, who works as a retail pharmacist in Altoona. My son, David, age 17 and
my daughter, Amanda, age 14, have both enjoyed growing up in the Altoona region.
