Hey!  My name is Brittany Barker, but most of my family and friends call me Bee.  (My initials before I got married.)  I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania called Dover.  We were a family of five, and I was the oldest with two younger brothers.  I started working when I was 14 as a bus girl at a restaurant called Lee’s Diner.  I soon became a waitress and stuck with it for 8 years until I went away to med school.  Whew I don’t miss it!!

I graduated from Dover Area High School in 2003.  Although it provided a way to college, you won’t find my picture in the “most likely to succeed” section of the yearbook, or my name on the “student of the month” billboard.  I lived and breathed soccer, and was privileged to start on the varsity team all four years.

I transitioned directly into York College of Pennsylvania, undeclared, and with no clear direction ahead of me.  At this point, I lived and breathed riding motorcycles.  (I tell my dad this is really his fault for not letting me get that camaro when I was 16, ha-ha.)  It wasn’t until my genetics professor pulled me aside and encouraged me to continue my education that I decided to go to medical school.

From the minute I laid eyes on the quaint little town of Lewisburg, I was in love.  I knew I wanted to go to WVSOM, and that’s exactly what I did.  I proceeded to get married to my husband Scott, and have a baby, Colton, all during my first year of medical school.  (I do not highly recommend this).  But I knew I was in my element because I liked every class, and loved every rotation…  well, almost.

I was certain I wanted to be an OB/GYN until I realized that babies come when they please, and not within my schedule J  Plus I missed pediatrics, geriatrics and even treating male patients!  And that’s when I knew that family medicine would be a perfect fit.  I chose Altoona because they are unopposed and everyone treated me like a member of the family from day one!

To get away from the demands of medicine, I enjoy spending time with my family, first and foremost.  My husband is a psychology major at Penn State, so we both stay pretty busy.  We both ride motorcycles, but not often together since the little man isn’t quite big enough for the back seat.  We also love dogs and have a puggle named Delilah.  We all three love sports and try to watch and play whenever we can!
