BenefitsSalariesPGY 1 $47,032 PGY 2 $48,072 PGY 3 $49,008Time OffResidents receive the following paid time off each year: 21 working days, and six holidays, to include New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. A holiday break is given each year at either Christmas or New Years. Emergency, Sickness and Bereavement days are granted, as necessary with full pay, in accordance with Hospital and Board policy. Educational AllowanceA stipend is provided for educational enhancement in each of the three years ($500/$1500/$1500). The Chief Resident receives an additional bonus in educational money. Educational moneys may not be accrued throughout residency training. Educational allowance may be used to purchase books, subscriptions or other educational/reading materials, specified medical equipment, and for reimbursement of expenses for ATLS certification/recertification, approved conferences and memberships, out-of town electives, the family Practice Board fee, and out-of-state licenses as approved. All second-year Residents attend a Practice Management Seminar at the Program's expense. CertificationsIncluded as an educational benefit is certification in BCLS, ACLS, PALS, ALSO, ATLS and Neonatal Resuscitation. Relocation AllowanceA stipend for receipted moving expenses is provided to all incoming Residents to facilitate the move to Altoona ($1500/$500). There is a wide range of housing options in both urban and rural settings. Rentals are readily available as well as a good selection of houses at reasonable prices. The Altoona Family Physicians staff will be happy to provide resources to assist you in finding suitable accommodations. Residency Loan ProgramCentral Pennsylvania Health Services Foundation has established a loan program, which allows Residents to borrow up to $25,000 at a competitive interest rate. Interest and repayment may be deferred until the end of residency training. InsuranceResidents receive malpractice, dental, disability, and life insurance at no cost; medical insurance is provided at a minimal cost. Malpractice insurance is provided. Medical insurance is comprehensive and includes a partial vision plan. Medical and dental insurance covers the Resident and his/her eligible dependents. ComputersThe preceptor room at the outpatient office and the resident resource room at Altoona Hospital have computers with internet access for use by the Residents. Residents receive a handheld Pocket PC loaner for first year. When they become 2nd year residents, they receive a Fujitsu Tablet PC which becomes their property on graduation. Computes are available throughout the hospital. Resident schedules are available on the private AFP website. Meals
Residents receive all meals on duty and on-call at no cost. A resident's family and visitors may purchase meals at discounted employee rates. Library FacilitiesThe Altoona Hospital has a well-equipped library that serves as a medical education resource for the area. Residents may obtain computerized literature searches and reference materials at no charge. Interlibrary loan and Loansome Doc is also available. ParkingFree onsite parking is provided. Residents park in the Physician's parking lot at the hospital and beside the AFP office. Cultural Benefit PackageIn support of the history and culture of our community, the program offers the additional benefit of an annual allowance for historic and arts events. Resident Meeting ReimbursementThe Residency Program pays expenses for two Residents to attend the Fall and Spring meetings of the Pennsylvania Assembly of Family Practice Residents each year. In addition, the Program sponsors two Residents attendance at the Annual American Academy of Family Physicians National Residents' Conference /Exhibit held in Kansas City, Missouri. Child CareA childcare center (1 2 Grow On) is available 2 blocks from the hospital (944-8330). Maternity/Paternity LeaveA written family and medical leave policy is in place, and every effort towards flexibility is made to meet family needs. Other BenefitsThe Residency Program will reimburse Residents for expenses associated with required licensure obtained while in the Internship and Residency. Membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians is paid annually for all Interns/Residents during their training. Membership in the American Osteopathic Association is paid for interns annually. White coats are issued in the first and second year of residency training (or upon entrance to the Residency Program). Free laundry services are provided weekly. Free notary service is available at the Altoona family Physicians office. This is limited to Residency Business.
