Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics

The Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics course (ALSO) is designed to familiarize the practitioner with the most current information and techniques in dealing with high risk and emergency obstetrical problems. This course is provided to all first year residents. It is a two-day course with hands-on workshops with pelvic models to simulate deliveries with vacuum and forceps, breech deliveries, shoulder dystocias and other obstetrical emergencies. This course is open to interested physicians, nurses, EMT's and others outside the Altoona community.

AFP's ALSO

Registrants come from as far away as West Virginia.
	Meeting in the Rotunda of the hospital, ALSO faculty review material with attendees.
Lecture topics include: First trimester complications Medical complications Preterm labor/PROM Late pregnancy bleeding Labor dystocia Safety in maternity care
	The most valuable part of ALSO is hands-on practice with pelvic models under the direct supervision of our trained faculty. Here Dr. Ruhl demonstrates a breech delivery with Piper forceps in the Malpresentations Workshop.

Learners work through three complicated patients in the OB Cases Workshop with Dr. Schroeder (OB-GYN) and Dr. McLellen.

	Help! I've got a shoulder dystocia! Using the HELPERR mnemonic, Dr. Rice teaches learners the maneuvers to coax a shoulder into delivering during the Shoulder Dystocia Workstation.

Participants learn interpretation of fetal heart tones using the DR. C BRAVADO mnemonic. Dr. Palmer reviews monitor strips in the Intrapartum Fetal Surveillance Workshop.

	Learners have plenty of time with forceps to get a feel for their application, as well as when to use them. Dr. McLellan teaches the Assisted Delivery Workstation.

Everyone loves the test!
