At their 9/23/09 meeting, the Residency
Review Committee for Family Medicine of the ACGME
granted full 5 year accreditation for our residency program. We received
only 3 citations
(programs with 5 year accreditation average 7-9), all of which are easily fixed
(or have been
fixed).
Program citations:
1) Inadequate Continuity in
Home Visits.
A couple years ago several of our residents
did not do the required home visits. The system
had already been fixed and all residents have this experience.
2) Inadequate Continuity
Nursing Home Visits
For a number of years our residents
provided care for the long term patients at the Center
for Nursing Care while on their rural rotation.
In order to give them a more longitudinal
experience with nursing home patients, we had
been negotiating with the Altoona Veterans Home to see patients there.
This agreement
had been signed but residents had not yet started seeing patients at the time of
our site visit. This citation will be completely satisfied by the new
arrangement.
3) Inadequate Experience in
Urology
We had been teaching urology with a series
of lunch conference lectures. The RRC no longer
considers this adequate. We will be instituting hands-on urology
experiences in the context of
another rotation. Residents can also learn vasectomies from local
urologists.
